People have referred to me as “great” because of my piano skills. Although I do believe I am a great pianist, I am not a great person. Happily, I have brushed up alongside greatness. My sister Ellen Barton (Google her!) is highly esteemed in her field of Linguistics. The leader in the study of linguistics is Noam Chomsky, a man of many notable achievements and great learning, and Ellen is often mentioned or annotated right after him. A friend of mine studied teaching English as a second language and Ellen (and Chomsky) were cited regularly in her textbooks.
In my piano studies I have often thought that although there is no substitute for diligent practice and hard work, my moments of close contact with some of the world’s greatest pianists, jazz, blues and classical, taught me more in the short time I spent with these people then all the practice and lessons put together.
